The Golden Age of Radio Comedy

Nostalgia was the theme of our latest talk given by Geoff Twentyman on the subject of “The Golden Age of Radio Comedy”.  The format of the talk centred around five of his favourite radio comedy programmes, Take it from here : Educating Archie ; The Goons : Hancock’s Half Hour and The Al Read Show. In each case he talked about how these shows came into being and the choice of characters who became the stars of these programmes. Then we listened to selections from CDs which for most of us brought back happy memories of listening to these shows from over 60 years ago. The audience were kept on their toes with questions related to who were the supporting actors and actresses involved with these comedies.
Following last years successful trip to London and The Houses of Parliament, on Friday 19th April a group of thirty members and partners are travelling by coach to York. Here they will visit The Bunker, followed by a carvery lunch and then on to The RAF Museum at Elvington.
At our next meeting on May 1st, Barry WIlkinson will be presenting an illustrated talk on ” North Sea Gas – Well to Use “.
