On Wednesday 20th November there was a well attended meeting, to listen to a talk and see slides by Geoff Queen entitled “We Apologise for the Delay”. Geoff had worked for the British Rail engineering department starting his career in the West Riding and ending at the British Railway Board in London. He entertained us with anecdotes (or excuses?) surrounding the circumstances for trains being delayed. These ranged from derailments, rabbits undermining embankments, ice forming in tunnels and even an elephant escaping into Morley tunnel. Two of his major projects, the repair of Barmouth viaduct and the shoring up of the cutting at Hampstead on the North London line were illustrated with slides.
